- Meet your Meditation Teacher -

Hi I am Susan.

I am a licensed Mental Health Counselor at Counseling and Healing Arts (CHA) of Oswego County, Inc. When I am not working one-on-one with clients, I facilitate group meditation classes where I provide a safe space for those interested in the practice of peaceful introspection. In conjunction with assisting my students find the stillness & balance they seek; I talk in great detail about various mindfulness perspectives and philosophies. Throughout this process, I provide the necessary tools for both beginners and seasoned practitioners to grow & maintain a successful meditation routine that fits into their unique circumstances.

Over a period of 8-weeks, I offer classes on Tuesday mornings downstairs in our zen & cozy group room; while on Monday evenings, I hold a separate session that is located in our Healing Arts Studio (HAS). HAS is CHA’s sister company & is located on the 3rd floor of our counseling office. Throughout each 8-week period, we explore techniques including MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction), Buddhist Psychology and Western Psychology practices that assist in the process of calming our thoughts and training the brain to stay in the here and now.

I have been meditating for most of my life dating back as far back as the 1970's when Transcendental Meditation became popular. More recently I have obtained formalized continuing educational training from The American Institute of Health Care Professionals, Inc. and I am currently working toward my certification as an MBSR teacher- trainer from the University of Massachusetts Medical School - Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society.

As a result of my dedication and affection for Mindfulness Meditation, I am thrilled to be bringing an opportunity for stillness & self-examination into our community and to Healing Arts Studio. There are many proven benefits of having a consistent meditation practice; these benefits range from greatly reducing levels of stress & anxiety to instilling an overall sense of balance & centeredness to those who choose to incorporate meditation in everyday life.

Below is a sample of one exercise that can help you stay calm in a stressful moment -

7-11 Breathing

Breathe in on the count of 7 and out on the count of 11

repeat this 3 times.

It's helpful to know that breathing out more than you breathe in will release cortisol that is stored in your body. Cortisol is a stress hormone that signals your body when there is stress - or danger, but in today's world is often over stimulated causing a buildup that can lead to a number of problems such as anxiety.

Come to my class and you will learn many ways to help keep you feeling balanced.

I hope to see you there!
